About Waltham Fire Department

The Waltham Fire Department traces its roots to 1816, when Engine Company Number 1 was formed and the Boston Manufacturing Company purchased the department's first apparatus, a Hunneman hand engine. The department was formally incorporated by the state legislature in 1844 under its first chief, Josiah Beard, and modernized over the following century, adopting the Gamewell fire alarm telegraph system in 1881 and completing its transition from horse-drawn to fully motorized apparatus by 1920.

Today WFD is organized into three divisions — Fire Suppression, Fire Training, and Fire Prevention — and operates as a paramilitary organization of more than 160 members under Fire Chief Andrew R. Mullin and four deputy chiefs. Ten fire companies run 24/7/365 out of headquarters and five outlying stations, staffed with a minimum of three personnel per apparatus and commanded by a Deputy Chief/Shift Commander on each shift.

Beyond structural firefighting, the department responds to emergency medical calls, hazardous materials incidents, vehicle extrication and technical rescue, water and ice emergencies, electrical and gas-leak emergencies, and building-code enforcement and fire-life-safety education through its Fire Prevention division.

MissionThe Waltham Fire Department is dedicated to protecting life, property and the environment for the citizens and businesses in the City of Waltham.
