Department careers page ↗DES is structured as a combined agency rather than a traditional single fire department, uniting four distinct divisions -- Communications, Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Management, and the Office of the Fire Marshal -- under one director, with Division/Assistant Chiefs of equal rank leading each area from headquarters at 100 Communications Drive in Centreville.
Actual fire and EMS response in the county is delivered by nine geographically distributed volunteer companies -- Kent Island VFD, Grasonville VFD, Queenstown VFD, Goodwill VFC, Church Hill VFC, Sudlersville VFC, Crumpton VFD, Queen Anne-Hillsboro VFC, and United Communities VFD -- that partner with DES to cover the county's stations. These volunteer departments are coordinated through the Queen Anne's County Fire & EMS Commission, whose roots trace back to a 1973 Fire Protection and Ambulance Commission and which was formally recognized as part of county government by ordinance in 2009.
The Office of the Fire Marshal, run out of Stevensville, handles fire code enforcement, plan review, and inspections countywide, including within Centreville and the county's incorporated towns, while EMS and Communications provide 911 dispatch and medical response support to the volunteer companies.
