Department careers page ↗The Auburn Fire Department protects the city of Auburn in Androscoggin County, Maine, from three fire stations staffed 24 hours a day. The department fields 64 full-time firefighter/EMTs and paramedics plus six administrative personnel and responds to roughly 5,000 fire, EMS, and emergency calls each year. Mutual aid agreements link Auburn with Durham, Lewiston, Minot, New Gloucester, Poland, and Turner.
Suppression is organized into four platoons of 16 firefighters each, led by 4 battalion chiefs, 4 captains, and 16 lieutenants. Since October 2014 the department has also provided the city's emergency ambulance transportation, covering mutual aid partners at their request; every member is cross-trained as both a firefighter and a licensed EMS provider, from EMT through paramedic.
Engine 2 Station on South Main Street dates to 1952, Central Station (Engine 3) on Minot Avenue to 1972 - its lower level houses the L/A 911 Communications Center - and Engine 5 Station on Center Street to 1974; the department's 2026 recruiting materials note a new Engine 2 station and public safety building are coming. A cement live-fire training building, built by the firefighters in 1989 with a state training grant, serves Auburn and regional departments. A Fire Prevention Division handles life-safety inspections, plans review, code enforcement, fire investigation, and a juvenile firesetter program. The city carries an ISO Class 3 rating inside the hydrant district and Class 9 outside it.
Auburn hires firefighter/EMS personnel through recruitment cycles announced on the department's recruitment page, with specialty and single-position openings posted on the City of Auburn employment portal. The 2026 cycle opened May 22 with an application deadline of July 6, a physical agility test July 7, oral board interviews July 14, and rookie school beginning September 8.
