Department careers page ↗Bondurant Emergency Services (BES) is the combination fire and EMS department for the City of Bondurant, Iowa, a community northeast of Des Moines in Polk County. Its Fire-Medics handle both sides of the job: fire suppression, vehicle extrication and rescue, hazardous materials response at the operations level, and 911 advanced life support ambulance transport serving more than 20,000 people in northeastern Polk County.
The department runs from the Bondurant Fire Department station at 101 Grant Street North. The fleet pairs three advanced life support ambulances with a rescue engine carrying extrication, rope, ice-water and grain bin rescue equipment, a pumper, a pumper/tender, a 100-foot E-One Bronto tower, and brush and command units built around ultra-high-pressure suppression systems.
Staffing mixes full-time, part-time and paid-per-call members — about thirty in recent years — under an Emergency Services Director, with close mutual aid relationships across eastern Polk County. The department responded to more than 1,000 calls in 2022.

Bondurant hires full-time Fire-Medics (posted as Firefighter/Paramedic Specialist) through the city's GovernmentJobs portal, alongside part-time and paid-per-call members. All candidates take the Central Iowa Fire and EMS Consortium test administered through DMACC and complete a pre-employment background check, physical, and drug screen.
Full-time Fire-Medics work 12-hour shifts on a rotating team schedule. Part-time Fire-Medics sign up for 20 to 30 hours per week including a weekend shift each pay period, and paid-per-call members commit to at least 18 hours a week — the department works with paid-per-call candidates to earn their fire and EMS certifications.
Requirements
- Firefighter I and Hazardous Materials Operations certification (minimum for full-time Fire-Medic hires)
- EMT-Advanced, Paramedic, Critical Care Paramedic, or Registered Nurse certification (RN requires EMT certification and Medical Director signoff)
- Part-time candidates: Paramedic (NREMT) with current ACLS, BCLS, and PALS certification; three years of EMS experience preferred
- Unrestricted Iowa Class D chauffeur's license (part-time Fire-Medics)
- Ability to read, write, and speak English
- Pass a pre-employment background check, physical, and drug screen

Benefits
Regular full-time employees are eligible for the City of Bondurant benefits program on the first of the month after hire, with medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and eligible dependents plus automatic enrollment in city-sponsored basic life and AD&D insurance. Fire-Medic positions are non-exempt, with overtime pay for hours beyond 40 in a work week.
