About Monroe Fire Protection District

Monroe Fire Protection District traces its roots to the Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department, founded in 1970. It merged with Clear Creek Township in 1987 to form the Perry Clear Creek Fire Protection District, and Indian Creek Township joined in 2019, prompting the rebrand to Monroe Fire Protection District. A change in Indiana state law then allowed additional townships — Van Buren, Bloomington, Benton, and Washington — to consolidate into the district through 2021 and 2022, bringing the district to its current footprint of nine of the county's eleven townships plus contract service to Salt and Polk townships.

The district operates from eight fire stations, with an eighth co-staffed alongside the Ellettsville Fire Department and a ninth station that was under construction as of early 2025, together covering roughly 300-330 square miles. Staffing includes more than 108 full-time, part-time, and substitute personnel providing round-the-clock coverage, governed by an elected/appointed Board of Trustees under Indiana Code 36-8-11.

Services span fire suppression, basic life support EMS (both non-transport response and an ambulance service supplementing IU Health Lifeline), and a range of technical rescue disciplines including rope rescue, water and ice rescue, wilderness search and rescue, and auto extrication. The district also provides hazardous materials response at the technician level as part of Indiana's regional IDHS Section 8 district response system, along with fire prevention inspections, code enforcement, and public fire-safety education.

MissionThe Monroe Fire Protection District (MFPD) is dedicated to protecting the lives, property, and environment of our communities from the adverse effects of fire, environmental, and sudden medical emergencies.
