Department careers page ↗The Hammond Fire Department is headquartered at 6110 Calumet Avenue in Hammond, Indiana, and operates six stations across the city, including its Central Fire Station. The department describes itself as one of the oldest, most aggressive, and most diverse fire departments in Northwest Indiana, staffing a workforce built around a wide range of fire and EMS certifications.

Beyond structural firefighting and EMS response, a large share of the department is cross-trained for hazardous materials work — 130 members hold HazMat Technician certification and another 49 hold HazMat Operations certification — while dozens more are trained in confined space entry and rescue and technical rescue. Administratively, the department is organized into a Front Office at Central Fire Station #4, a Fire Prevention, Investigation and Education section, a Training Division led by assistant chiefs over fire training and EMS coordination, and a Mechanical Division responsible for apparatus maintenance.
The Hammond Fire Department hires firefighter/EMS candidates who hold at least an EMT-Basic certification, with hiring preference given to applicants who are Paramedic-certified.
