Department careers page ↗Carmel Fire Department protects Carmel, Indiana — a fast-growing city of more than 100,000 people just north of Indianapolis — from six stations, including the Steven A. Couts Fire Station 341 and the Douglas Callahan Fire Station 345. The department is organized into administration, operations, community relations, logistics, and planning divisions, each led by a chief officer, and it runs dedicated Fire Prevention, EMS, Hazmat, Safety & Training, and Honor Guard units alongside a Media Relations Division.
CFD has held international accreditation from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) and the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE) since August 2013, and was reaccredited in March 2024, making it one of only four CFAI-accredited agencies in Indiana. Beyond structural fire suppression and EMS transport, crews train in hazmat response, heavy extrication, and rope and swift-water rescue, and the department supports a SWAT medic program, a drone/UAS team, and a Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) program that connects frequent 911 callers with follow-up care. CFD also runs community programs such as the Firefighter For-A-Day Camp, Hoosier Burn Camp, Public Safety Day, and an annual 9/11 Ceremony of Remembrance.
Recruits go through an annual hiring cycle: an application window followed by CPAT physical-ability certification, a written and oral exam, and a background investigation before being placed on a one-year eligibility list. Every hire — including lateral candidates from other departments — completes a roughly 25-week recruit academy (17 weeks of fire training, 8 weeks of EMT-B training) before working a probationary year rotating among CFD's six stations.
MissionCommitted to providing excellent around-the-clock emergency response services to the community.
Carmel Fire Department hires firefighters through an annual testing cycle. Applicants must be at least 21 and hired before their 40th birthday (unless already enrolled in Indiana's PERF retirement system); no prior firefighting experience or certification is required, since CFD trains every hire — including lateral candidates — through its own recruit academy. Candidates need a valid CPAT certification to complete the application, then sit a written exam (40% of score) and a structured oral interview (60%), followed by a background investigation with a polygraph or CVSA examination before a conditional offer.
