Department careers page ↗Anderson Fire Department protects the city of Anderson from a network of stations, with Firestation 1 on West 5th Street serving as headquarters. In addition to structural firefighting, the department runs three full-time Advanced Life Support ambulances staffed to Indiana's highest allowed level of prehospital care, and its engine and rescue companies also carry EMS capability so the closest unit can begin patient care quickly. Every firefighter is trained to at least the HazMat Operations level, with some trained to the Technician level, and rescue companies handle motor vehicle extrication, water rescue, and high-angle rope rescue in addition to fire suppression.
The department also operates the AFD Training Center, an 18-acre campus on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard built in 2006 after a levee project displaced the department's original training grounds. The center's four-story steel training tower (completed 2008) and flashover chamber support live-fire, high-angle rescue, confined-space, and search training, and the facility serves as the regional training hub for Indiana Department of Homeland Security District 6, a 13-county area encompassing multiple law enforcement, EMS, and public utility agencies in addition to fire departments. A 5,000-square-foot classroom building was added in 2011, with additional modular classrooms donated in 2014.
Beyond emergency response, the department runs fire investigation and public fire-safety education programs, including a Fire Safety House used for community outreach, reflecting its stated view that prevention and education are central to reducing loss of life and property.
