About Decatur Fire Department

The Decatur Fire Department serves the city of Decatur, Illinois from seven fire stations positioned throughout the community. In 2024 the department's roughly 110 personnel responded to more than 14,000 calls for service, backed by a Class 2 ISO rating that reflects strong fire suppression capability for the city's residents and businesses.

Beyond structural firefighting, DFD maintains specialized capacity to match Decatur's industrial and geographic footprint, including three Class I railroads, heavy industry, Lake Decatur, the Sangamon River, and an airport able to handle large aircraft. Dedicated Hazardous Materials, SCUBA/Dive, and Technical Rescue teams train for chemical spills, water rescues and recoveries, and complex trench, confined-space, collapse, and high-angle rope rescues. A Fire Prevention & Education division, led by a Deputy Chief of Fire Prevention with three fire inspectors/investigators, handles fire investigations, school programs, and community safety outreach year-round, including Fire Prevention Month each October.

How to get hired

The Decatur Fire Department hires through the City of Decatur's NEOGOV careers portal rather than a standalone recruitment page. Fire and EMS openings are posted there as they become available, and the city advises checking back weekly since postings can be infrequent.
