About Timberlake Fire Protection District

Timberlake Fire Protection District was created in 1999 through the merger of the Athol and Bayview Fire Departments. The district covers roughly 83 square miles of North Idaho, serving a year-round population of about 8,000 residents that swells to more than 20,000 during the summer tourist season. Coverage includes Farragut State Park, Silverwood Theme Park, and the U.S. Navy Acoustic Research Detachment, and the district also extends fire protection to the Little Blacktail Community across the line in Bonner County.

The department operates as a combination force of career and volunteer firefighters, with governance provided by an elected Board of Fire Commissioners that holds regular public meetings. In late 2024, Timberlake Fire was awarded a FEMA SAFER Grant of $405,760 over a four-year period specifically to recruit and retain volunteer firefighters, with a goal of growing to 51 total volunteers; the grant covers training and gear for new recruits with no prior experience required.

MissionOur mission is to serve and protect the Timberlake community.

How to get hired

Timberlake Fire recruits both seasonal (paid) firefighters and volunteers. Seasonal firefighter applicants must hold FF1, FF1/EMT, or EMT certification. The district is also running a FEMA SAFER Grant-funded volunteer recruitment and retention campaign; volunteer applicants need no prior firefighting experience, as training and gear are provided as part of the grant. Completed applications can be dropped off at Station 1 or emailed to the district.
