About County Of Maui Department Of Fire & Public Safety

The County of Maui Department of Fire & Public Safety serves one of the most geographically unusual jurisdictions in the United States, covering the islands of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. From 13 stations, its crews answer everything from structure and vehicle fires to brush fires, marine vessel fires, hazardous materials incidents, and vehicle extrications.

The department handled over 16,000 emergency situations in a recent year, reflecting a broad, all-hazards mission. Beyond firefighting, personnel provide medical and trauma response, technical rescues in ocean, mountain, and confined-space settings, and natural-disaster response.

The department drew national attention following the devastating August 2023 wildfires, and it has since published origin-and-cause and after-action reports along with a strategic plan. It also runs community-facing programs including fire safety education, a Junior Lifeguard program, and school and station visits.

Oversight is provided by the Fire & Public Safety Commission, with day-to-day operations run from headquarters in Kahului.
