About Gainesville Fire Department

Gainesville Fire Department began as the Gainesville Hook and Ladder Company, formally organized on February 18, 1876, following decades without organized firefighting service after the city's 1821 incorporation and a destructive 1851 fire. The department transitioned to an all-paid, career force in the early 1900s and grew from a handful of firefighters to a modern multi-station operation, adding its second station in 1954 and a third in 1991, with a fifth station and a new training complex planned for 2025.

Today GFD runs four fire stations - on Pine Street, Cleveland Highway, Nancy Creek Road, and Memorial Park Drive - staffing a fleet of twelve apparatus (seven engines, two aerials, one rescue, and two squads) with 92 firefighters working rotating 24-hour shifts, supported by 11 administrative staff. The department covers about 36 square miles, protecting roughly 36,000 residents overnight and up to 150,000 people during the daytime population swell, and holds an ISO Class 1 rating, placing it among a small fraction of U.S. departments at that top tier.

GFD's core mission spans fire suppression, emergency medical response, disaster management, and fire prevention and public education, with firefighters cross-trained as EMTs so they can begin medical intervention ahead of ambulance arrival. Specialized capabilities include high-angle rope rescue, confined-space and trench rescue, and hazardous materials response, backed by a minimum of 240 hours of annual training per firefighter under Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council requirements.
