Department careers page ↗Wakulla County Fire Rescue provides emergency response countywide, combining Basic and Advanced Life Support, emergency transport, fire suppression, rescue, and vehicle extrication in a single agency. Three staffed stations (Crawfordville, Medart, and Wakulla Station) are crewed 24/7 by career firefighter/EMTs and paramedics, while seven additional volunteer stations round out coverage across the county. On a given day WCFR deploys 18 personnel across four ambulances and three fire engines, supervised by three on-duty captains and a battalion chief, with full-time staff working 48 hours on/96 hours off.
Beyond emergency response, WCFR runs a Fire Prevention & Public Education division that performs business fire-safety inspections, school and childcare fire-safety education, and free in-home smoke detector checks and installations. Fire operations are funded through a Municipal Services Benefit Unit (MSBU) fire assessment, while EMS operations are funded by ad valorem tax and supplemented by billing for emergency services and ambulance transport.
The department's roots trace to county EMS service starting in 1972 (one of the first ALS providers in Florida) and volunteer fire departments organizing in the late 1960s and 1970s. A full-time professional fire department was established in 2007 and merged with EMS in 2010 to form Wakulla County Fire Rescue; in 2017 the county's volunteer fire departments came under the WCFR umbrella, unifying career and volunteer service under one department.
WCFR is currently hiring flex (part-time) Firefighter/EMTs and Firefighter/Paramedics. Applicants download and complete a Wakulla County Employment Application and a Tobacco Affidavit, attach copies of required certifications, and submit the packet to Wakulla County Employee Support Services.

Does the fire department fill swimming pools?
No. Water from fire hydrants or a tanker truck is not suitable for swimming or bathing.
There is a fire hydrant spilling water in my neighborhood - who do I report that to?
Fire hydrants are owned and operated by municipal water providers (Talquin, City of Tallahassee, City of Sopchoppy, or Panacea Water). These providers sometimes open hydrants to flush water lines of sediment; if you're concerned, contact your local water authority.
