About Suwannee County Fire/ Rescue

Suwannee County Fire Rescue traces its roots to a 1972 volunteer ambulance service in Branford and the Live Oak Fire Department's early EMS operations, evolving through several reorganizations of county fire, EMS, and emergency management functions before EMS and Fire were formally merged in 2006 to create Suwannee County Fire Rescue. Today the department operates five career (professional) stations, covering the Live Oak, McAlpin, Beachville/Branford, Dowling Park, and Wellborn areas, with a sixth station under construction, along with additional volunteer/reserve stations supported by a corps of volunteers and reservists.

The department delivers fire suppression, advanced life support EMS and non-emergency medical transport, hazardous materials response at the operational level, technical rescue (water, high-angle, and confined space), community risk reduction and fire prevention education, new-construction plan review, and annual fire inspections. Specialty teams include water rescue, rope rescue, hazmat, and an unmanned aerial system (drone) unit, along with a Tactical Response Team and participation in a Regional Hazmat Team.

SCFR is led by Fire Chief Dan Miller, the department's fourth chief since the 2006 merger, following a line of leadership that included the department's first Public Safety Directors and, since 2020, its Fire Chiefs. The department emphasizes ongoing training, professional development, and fiscal accountability to the citizens of Suwannee County it serves.

MissionTo save lives, protect property, and strengthen community relations utilizing highly trained employees and state-of-the-art equipment.
