About Polk County Fire Rescue

Polk County Fire Rescue (PCFR) delivers fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue, and fire prevention across all of unincorporated Polk County plus the municipalities of Eagle Lake, Polk City, Mulberry, Lake Hamilton, and Hillcrest Heights in Central Florida.

The department covers roughly 2,000 square miles and serves a population of more than 600,000 residents (plus countless visitors) around the clock. It is regarded as one of the largest fire departments in the state.

PCFR operates from about 50 stations with a combined force of more than 600 career employees and more than 600 volunteers, fielding 150-plus vehicles. Firefighters are cross-trained for emergency medical care, and the department hires both Firefighter-EMTs and Firefighter-Paramedics.

How to get hired

Polk County Fire Rescue only accepts applications during open recruitment, which opens periodically based on operational needs. All hiring runs through the National Testing Network (NTN): candidates first complete the CPAT (Candidate Physical Abilities Test) and FireTEAM assessments, selecting Polk County Fire Rescue so results are forwarded to the department. CPAT and FireTEAM must be completed within one year prior to applying.

Applicants then upload required documentation to NTN, including a Florida Class E (or higher) driver's license, a State of Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance, EMT-Basic or Paramedic certification, CPR/ACLS card, four NIMS certifications (ICS-100, ICS-200, IS-700, IS-800), and an Emergency Vehicle Operator Course certificate. A clean driving record is required.
