About Leesburg Fire Department

Leesburg Fire Department traces its roots to 1875, when volunteer neighbors fought fires with bucket brigades. The department modernized in the mid-1880s, culminating in the city council's 1886 purchase of a horse-drawn Silsby steam fire engine for $2,425 — a turning point that moved Leesburg from manual firefighting toward a mechanized, professional force.

Today the department operates out of four stations (Station 61 at 201 S. Canal St., Station 62 on W. Griffin Road, Station 63 on Veteran's Road, and Station 64 on Rogers Industrial Park Road) with 45 total firefighters, staffing 13-16 line personnel per 24-hour shift. Its fleet includes pumper engines, an aerial/tower ladder, a quint, and a dedicated airport rescue and firefighting (ARFF) apparatus, reflecting its coverage of the local airport in addition to structural and rescue calls.

The department provides fire suppression, rescue services, Advanced Life Support EMS, fire inspections, disaster preparedness, and public education, and is led by Fire Chief Joe Mera, a department veteran of more than 20 years appointed to the role in 2022.

MissionThe Mission of the Leesburg Fire Department is to save the lives and property of our residents, business owners and visitors.
