About Englewood Area Fire Control District

Englewood Area Fire Control District has protected the Englewood, Florida area since 1949, becoming an independent special taxing district under Florida law in 1983. Today the district covers 83 square miles of southern Sarasota and western Charlotte County -- including Englewood, Grove City, Cape Haze, Rotonda, and Englewood East -- plus 34 miles of intercoastal and coastal waterways, from six strategically positioned fire stations.

The district's roughly 50,000 year-round residents swell to more than 70,000 during the winter season, and crews answered nearly 7,000 emergency calls in 2024 while safeguarding over $10 billion in property. Beyond fire suppression and advanced life support medical response, the department handles fire code enforcement, public education, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, and marine operations along its extensive waterfront.

A five-member board of commissioners, elected by district voters to four-year terms, oversees the district, which operates under the motto "Desire to Serve, Courage to Act."
