About Glastonbury Fire Department

Glastonbury Fire Department traces its roots to 1943, when three independent town companies — Naubuc, South Glastonbury Volunteer, and East Glastonbury Volunteer — merged into a single agency to serve the whole town. A fourth historic company, Buckingham, also remains part of the department's heritage. Today GFD operates as a combination (paid-on-call) department out of four stations spread across Glastonbury, providing fire suppression, emergency rescue, hazardous materials response, and fire prevention services to more than 35,000 residents.

Every recruit completes roughly 180 hours of Firefighter I training, along with hazardous-materials response training to the operational level, Incident Command System/NIMS training, and awareness-level terrorism/WMD training, before reaching active status. Members then keep current with at least 24 hours of annual refresher training — covering SCBA, CPR, ladders, hazmat, and live structural fire evolutions — much of it at the department's own Thomas G. Manager, Sr. Fire Training Facility on Nutmeg Lane. The department also runs a Fire Cadet program for youth ages 14-18 who want to learn firefighting fundamentals before they're old enough to join as members.

MissionProtect life and property within the community through the provision of professional fire service, including, but not limited to: fire prevention, suppression, rescue services, management of hazardous material situations, and related public safety services.
