Department careers page ↗Upper Pine River Fire Protection District provides all-risk fire, rescue, and emergency medical services across roughly 284 square miles of mountain and rural terrain in eastern La Plata County and western Archuleta County, Colorado. It covers the Town of Bayfield along with Gem Village, Forest Lakes, Vallecito Lake, and Lemon Reservoir.
The district serves about 14,000 year-round residents, a number that swells with seasonal visitors in the summer. Roughly three-quarters of its call volume is EMS and motor-vehicle related, reflecting a busy medical mission alongside fire and wildland work.
The agency runs eight stations, with three staffed around the clock (Bayfield, Forest Lakes, and Lake Vallecito), and stands up a seasonal wildland crew each spring and summer. It is notably a CAAS-accredited, fire-based EMS organization, a rare distinction for an agency of its size.
The district hires full-time and reserve firefighters, including Firefighter/EMT, Firefighter/Paramedic, and Engine Boss roles, and accepts applications on a rolling basis until positions are filled. Reserve positions are part-time with limited benefits, capped at 120 hours per month.
To apply, download the fillable application from the district website and submit it with a resume by email to hr@upperpinefpd.org, or deliver it in person to the HR Coordinator at 515 Sower Drive in Bayfield during business hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday).
