Vista Fire Department

Vista Fire Rescue is the career fire department of the City of Vista in northern San Diego County, California. Under contract it also protects the independent Vista Fire Protection District, covering a combined 36.5 square miles (19 in the city, 17.5 in the district) and a population of about 120,500. Six stations deliver fire suppression, emergency medical care at the EMT and paramedic level with fire-based ambulance transport, technical rescue, hazardous materials mitigation, fire prevention, and citywide disaster preparedness.

The department fields 94 sworn personnel, with 79 suppression members divided among three shifts — each led by a battalion chief — supported by a 12-person administration office. The frontline fleet includes five Type I engines, an aerial truck, three Type III brush engines, four paramedic rescue ambulances, and two BLS ambulances, answering more than 16,000 calls for service a year. EMS operates under San Diego County and state EMS authority in coordination with Tri-City Medical Center.

Vista's fire service dates to 1927, when residents organized a 14-member volunteer department after a large fire at the Vista Irrigation District office. The district hired its first paid firefighters in 1945 and became a fully paid department in 1963, the same year the City of Vista incorporated. Today the Fire Prevention Bureau — a fire marshal, assistant fire marshal, and four fire inspector/investigators — handles inspections, plan review, fire investigation, public education, and vegetation management.

Vista hires firefighter/paramedics and single-role EMTs through the City of Vista's application portal on GovernmentJobs.com, and posts class-spec interest lists candidates can subscribe to between recruitments. Firefighters are hired at the firefighter/paramedic level; the department's recruiting page points future applicants to the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) and Palomar College's fire technology and emergency medical education programs.

The EMT ranks are a deliberate pipeline into the fire service: EMTs are typically hired as hourly floats and promoted into regular full-time or part-time positions, and time in the classification is capped at 6,240 paid hours (the equivalent of about 36 months full time). EMT applicants need a current California EMT-I certification, County of San Diego EMT accreditation, a Class C license with ambulance driver's endorsement, and CPR certification.

Selection follows the city's posted process: application with supplemental questionnaire, written, performance, and/or oral examinations, placement on an eligibility list, then pre-employment clearances including Live Scan fingerprinting and/or a background exam and a medical exam with drug screen.
