Pechanga Fire Department

The Pechanga Fire Department is the fire and emergency services agency of the Pechanga Band of Indians, a sovereign tribal government, protecting the Pechanga Indian Reservation near Temecula in Riverside County, California. The department covers about 10 square miles of wildland-urban interface, serving roughly 600 reservation residents, some 3,500 people who work in tribal establishments each day, and Pechanga Resort & Casino, a nearly 1.5-million-square-foot property that draws upwards of 15,000 visitors daily.

Pechanga's fire service began as a volunteer department; the Tribe's General Membership approved construction of the Fire Station Public Safety Building in April 1997, and in April 1999 nine personnel - three captains, three engineers, and three firefighters - were hired to run a full-time department. Twelve more personnel came aboard in October 2003 to staff a 100-foot tiller quint, and the department became an Advanced Life Support provider in November 2011.

Today the department employs 30 full-time fire professionals organized into four divisions - Operations, Training, Prevention, and Emergency Medical Services - supported by nine reserve firefighters, with a nine-member Fuels Management Crew (full-time since 2021) clearing flammable vegetation and maintaining fuel breaks across the reservation. Apparatus includes a Type 1 Pierce engine, the tiller quint, two Type III engines, and a US&R vehicle. Six members serve on FEMA US&R Task Force 6 and four serve on CAL FIRE Incident Management Teams, and the department assists Riverside and San Diego counties with fire response and emergency services. Its responsibilities extend to the Tribe's cultural resources, including the Great Oak (Wi'aasal), the largest naturally grown indigenous coast live oak in the western United States.

Pechanga Fire hires through the Pechanga Tribal Government: openings appear on the tribal employment page and take applications through its BambooHR careers portal, and recent firefighter postings have remained open until filled. The entry career rank is Firefighter Paramedic, which requires a completed California state-accredited fire academy (or State Fire Marshal Firefighter I certification) and a California paramedic license; lateral applicants need two years of full-time firefighter paramedic experience. A paid reserve program staffs a minimum of two 24-hour shifts per month.

Per the department's postings, candidates pass an application review, a pre-employment assessment test and interview, and medical and background checks. The tribal government is a drug-free workplace with pre-employment and random testing.
