About Oakland Fire Department

The Oakland Fire Department (OFD) protects roughly 78 square miles and more than 400,000 residents on the east shore of San Francisco Bay. Founded in 1869, it is one of the older and larger municipal fire services in California, staffed by about 420 personnel across roughly two dozen fire stations organized into battalions.

OFD is a busy, all-hazards department, responding to tens of thousands of emergency calls a year, the large majority of them medical. Its mission goes well beyond structure fire: crews cover the steep, wildfire-prone Oakland Hills, the Port and waterfront, and Oakland International Airport.

The department carries specialized capabilities including a heavy rescue unit, hazmat teams, wildland apparatus, marine/fireboat rescue, and airport crash tenders. OFD is also the sponsoring agency for California Task Force 4, a FEMA urban search and rescue team.

Oakland has a notable place in fire service history: in the 1920s it was among the first departments in the nation to hire African American firefighters, and in 1955 Chief John Sweeney ordered the racial integration of all Oakland fire stations, making OFD one of the first departments in the country to desegregate.

How to get hired

Oakland hires entry-level firefighters through a competitive, multi-stage civil service process run via the City's online jobs portal. Candidates apply during an announced recruitment window, then advance through application screening, a written examination, an oral board, and a chief's interview, followed by background investigation and a medical exam before entering the fire academy.

Applicants must already hold EMT certification and a CPAT card when they apply, so much of the work happens before the posting opens. The department also periodically runs a separate lateral firefighter process for already-certified firefighters from other agencies.
