About Nevada County Consolidated Fire District

NCCFD was formed in July 1991 through the merger of the Gold Flat and Bullion Fire Districts, combining six stations, about 56 square miles, and roughly 17,000 residents under one board and a newly hired career fire chief. The district grew through three further consolidations: the Alta-Oaks-Sunset Fire District in January 1993, the Watt Park Fire Protection District (established 1958) in January 1998, and the 49er Fire Protection District (a volunteer department dating to 1956, later a special district) in October 2003. Each merger added stations, population, and staff, building the district's current footprint.

Today NCCFD is an all-career department covering five service areas through ten stations - four staffed and four unstaffed, all district-owned - serving a population of over 32,000 across residential, commercial, industrial, and rural terrain along the Highway 49 corridor, Alta Sierra, Banner Mountain, Cascade Shores, and Scotts Flat. Field staffing includes a Fire Chief, three Battalion Chiefs, a Fire Marshal, eleven Captains, four Lieutenants, twelve Firefighter/Operators, and two Mechanics, supported by an administrative team of an Administrative Services Manager, Finance Assistant, and Administrative Services Assistant.

The district responds to structure, vegetation, and vehicle fires; medical emergencies; water and confined-space rescues; large-animal rescues; vehicle accidents; and electrical and gas hazards. It maintains a swift-water rescue program out of Station 84 and a Type III wildland engine at Station 89. Effective July 1, 2023, NCCFD's ISO Public Protection Classification improved from Class 4 to Class 3/3X, placing it in the top 10% of departments nationwide.
