Department careers page ↗The Long Beach Fire Department was established on March 16, 1897 by 28 volunteer charter members after a series of destructive fires, and today is a full-service urban department with more than 500 employees.
Beyond structural firefighting and emergency medical services, the department runs a Marine Safety Division covering beach operations and rescue-boat operations along the city's waterfront, plus fire prevention, hazardous materials management, and community programs.
The department frames its work around a set of core values: Pride, Respect, Family, Commitment, Trust, and Teamwork.
Missionprotect lives, property and the environment, improving the quality of life and safety
Long Beach recruits firefighters through a multi-stage civil-service process that begins with an application and a candidate interest card. Prospective firefighters move through a written examination, a physical abilities test, oral interviews, a background investigation, and medical screening before selection and entry into the academy.
The department maintains a dedicated recruitment page and email (JoinLBFD@longbeach.gov) and publishes compensation, benefits, and lateral-hire information for candidates.
