The Suisun City Fire Department protects the 4.5 square miles of Suisun City, a Solano County waterfront community roughly halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento. Established in 1861 as a volunteer corps that replaced a U.S. Army fire brigade — a history the department notes is older than the city itself — it operates today as a combination agency of career and reserve volunteer members organized into four divisions: Administration, Operations, Training, and Fire Prevention & Public Education.

All-risk response runs from a single firehouse, Station 47 at 621 Pintail Drive, staffed 24 hours a day. The department provides ALS (paramedic) first response, with Medic Ambulance handling medical transport under a countywide contract and dispatch provided by the public safety dispatch center housed at the police department. In 2021 the department ran 3,377 calls for service, including 227 fire calls. The fleet includes two Type 1 engines, a Type 3 engine and two Type 5 engines, a ladder truck, a rescue, a light-and-air unit, and two Zodiac rescue boats, and the department attaches units to wildland strike teams when possible.

Two special teams anchor the department's technical capabilities. The Water Rescue Team — staffed around the clock with at least two certified swiftwater/flood rescue technicians and rescue boat operators, at least one of them a paramedic — covers river, canal, delta, and flood rescue in the city's waterways and provides mutual aid across Solano County. The USAR team handles confined-space, rope, trench, and building-collapse rescues, with members certified through California State Fire Training. In October 2025 the department announced its ISO Public Protection Classification improved from Class 4 to Class 3, effective October 1, 2025.

Suisun City hires through the city's CalOpps portal, and fire listings appear there only during announced recruitment periods — postings close once enough applications are received or within 14 days, whichever comes first, so applying early matters. Career firefighter applicants need a current California EMT certification (California Paramedic accepted in lieu), California Firefighter I or II certification, and a current CPAT card; candidates who advance face a panel interview, a thorough background investigation, and a medical examination.

The reserve volunteer firefighter track offers a paid-per-shift way to gain fire service experience alongside career members: volunteers commit to a minimum of two 24-hour shifts or four 12-hour day shifts each month, complete assigned training, and finish an SCFD firefighter task book within 12 months.
