Department careers page ↗Arizona Fire & Medical Authority (AFMA) is a full-service, all-hazard fire and rescue agency operating from thirteen strategically located stations. It protects more than 103,000 residents across approximately 281 square miles of Maricopa County, including communities such as Sun City West, Sun Lakes, Buckeye Valley, Guadalupe, Tonopah, and Wittmann.
AFMA was created in 2017 through an intergovernmental agreement between the North County and South County Fire & Medical Districts, using a joint powers authority model that lets partner districts keep local control while sharing personnel, equipment, and operations. Buckeye Valley Fire District joined in 2023, and the agency began serving the Town of Guadalupe in October 2025.
The organization is staffed by more than 300 full-time and part-time fire and EMS professionals, supported by over 50 Fire Corps volunteers who assist with community outreach. AFMA is internationally accredited, holds an ISO Class 1 rating, and is recognized as a Premier EMS Agency and Heart Safe City.
