Department careers page ↗Bessemer Fire Department traces its roots to December 5, 1888, when roughly 40 citizens signed up to form the city's first fire company, just two years after Bessemer itself was founded by Henry F. Debardeleben. The department made its first official run on December 16, 1888, extinguishing a fire in just over three minutes — an early marker of the fast-response culture the department still points to today.
More than a century later, Bessemer Fire Department has grown into one of the larger municipal departments in the Birmingham metro area, staffing 109 firefighters out of five stations spread across the city. The department holds a Class 1 ISO Public Protection Classification, placing it among the top tier of fire departments nationally for fire suppression capability.
